Many detail and ceramic coating shops use an average, run of the mill ceramic coating. We don't use an average coating-we use an elite ceramic coating. There are so many ceramic coating brands out there. There are some coatings that are available to anyone, and then there are coatings that are only available to professional detailers.
I have been installing ceramic coatings since 2015. Longer than anyone else in York County, Pa. I see FB Ads pop up on my feed all of the time. The Ad plasters the coating brand all over the place. I see what brand it is and I wonder why they would be proud of that brand. It's not a pro only brand. It's an average coating and not an elite product.
The most important factor in installing coatings is the prep. Every coating requires a certain paint preparation before installing the coating. We could have the best coating every made, but if the prep is not done properly, then the coating will not perform as it should and it will not last. With that being said, the coating is the second most important factor.
I don't talk much about what brand of coating I use to my customers. Mainly for the same reason a mechanic doesn't talk about the brand of tools he uses to his customers. I'm sure other mechanics talk to each other about the latest and greatest awesome tool, as do I with my wife and other detailers. Even my kids know what coating is the best.
Most coatings will last for many, many years. If it doesn't perform or last, the issue was, most likely the prep. However, I will have to mention the brand in order for you to understand why I am so much more expensive than other coating shops around me.
The coatings I use are permanent. They are made of a different materials and resins than most other coatings. Most coatings has a glass-like resin that gives it it's strength. Mine uses an industrial diamond-like resin. It's stronger and harder and more durable than others.
I also don't have "packaged" coating services. In other words, my coating services are custom. My coatings are reported to carfax, carry guarantees, and have documentation. They allow you to clean your interior less and wash the exterior less. They stop the aging process of your vehicle as well.
You could choose the cheaper coating and I'm sure it will be better than a wax or sealant service, but it's not the best coating available. I'm not looking for everyone to choose me. Most people will choose the cheaper guy and that's fine with me. Those who choose the cheap guy will be waiting a few months for their appointment. You can choose the "McDonald's" of coatings with the other guy or you can choose the "Wolfgang Puck" of coatings with us.
We use Opti-Coat Ceramic Coatings. Opti-Coat was the first ceramic coating made. It was created in 2008 and in 2015, they started offering a pro only line of coatings. Opti-Coat has four exterior coatings and one interior coating. Many people are not concerned with the brand of coatings when they are inexpensive. When the coating has a higher cost, the brand becomes more relevant.
The names of the four exterior coatings starting with the least durable are: Paint Guard, Opti-Coat Pro, Opti-Coat Pro Plus, and Opti-Coat Pro 3. The interior coating is called Opti-Coat Leather (Plastic and Fabric) Guard. Every part of the exterior and interior can be coated. If you want to learn more about the Opti-Coat brand, feel free to call me and I would be happy to discuss it. You will quickly understand why we charge more and why our coatings are worth more than all of the other ones.
Please read this description before proceeding any further! These prices are based on the installation of the coating only. Not every vehicle needs the same prep prior to the coating. Some vehicles are newer and cleaner than others so, the chemical wash and the light polishing of the paint are add-ons. An exterior ceramic coating is a protective layer applied to the clear coat (top layer.) of the exterior of your vehicle. The ceramic coating can also be applied to metal, plastic, wheels, headlights, and glass. the benefits of a coating are, ease of cleaning, saves money, time, and preserves the exterior of the vehicle. Ceramic coating prices start @ $1,200.
With each passing decade, car paint gets thinner and softer. Since paint is the most expensive part of the vehicle, manufacturers put less paint on to save money.
A car's exterior consists of the metal, (it is dipped in zinc to form a protective layer which prevents rusting), a primer paint layer, the color and then the clear coat on top. The clear coat is what stops rust and corrosion from effecting the outside of the metal. The zinc plating stop rust and corrosion from the underside of the metal. If either one is breached then rust (oxidation) will begin to eat the metal.
Since we can't do much of anything to protect the underside of the metal we can certainly protect the outside (clear coat). Clear coat is essentially plastic. About 50 microns in thickness. To give a point of reference, a post it note is about 50 microns thick. It looks really shiny and the paint (color) underneath looks deep and glossy when it is new. As soon as the car is painted oxidation goes to work.
Oxidation "clouds" up the clear coat (like a cataract on the eye). It makes the paint look dull and dingy. the rate at which this happens varies depending on conditions, use and how well the vehicle is cleaned or not cleaned. As the clear coat ages and becomes more oxidized it is harder to clean and needs to be polished in order to remove the oxidation.
How can you make your vehicle look new and easy to clean? With a ceramic coating. When you ceramic coat the inside or outside an easier tp clean surface is created. How is this possible? Both the inside and outside surfaces are clear coated. The coating has a similar chemical formulation that adheres to the clear coat. the coating is harder than the clear coat and has self clean properties. As a result, dirt is easier to remove and the surface stays cleaner for longer.
Which ceramic coating should you choose? Choose the coating that best fits your budget based on the level of performance that you want. We have 4 exterior ceramic coatings to choose from and 3 interior ceramic coating levels to choose from. The reality is that any coating is better than no coating and the sooner you have it installed the better.
